Hospitals have always been important clients to Knickerbocker, as they require a specific kind of professionalism, care, and skillset. So, when Ascension Health Saints Mary & Elizabeth Medical Center (then owned by Amita) in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago needed new roofs on their 3rd, 16th, and 17th floors, Knickerbocker partnered up with Tremco Inc, a leading roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, to get the job done.
The project presented several challenges including a difficult existing roof system that had to be torn off, high winds up on the 16th and 17th floor roofs, and last but certainly not least, a very protective mother Peregrine Falcon (pictured above). The falcon has a protected nesting area on the 16th floor roof that required strategic planning to work around.
We installed a Tremco torch-applied APP modified bitumen roof system over tapered insulation and a cover board. In the end, the project was a success, and we can only hope the falcon family feels the same.
