As roofing professionals, we are consistently working on new and complex projects in the Chicago area. Recently, we completed work on the new outpatient clinic at La Rabida Children’s Hospital, located adjacent to Lake Michigan. The hospital was not only looking to build an addition to the current facility, but also to renovate some existing buildings. This is where Knickerbocker stepped in.

Specifically, we installed new PVC roof systems to meet current codes, as well as provide proper insulation and reflectivity to the building. On both the new construction and the existing construction, we installed a 60 mil Johns Manville white PVC roof membrane adhered to 1/2 ” Securock cover board. The new construction features a metal deck substrate, and the existing building features a concrete deck substrate.

The project also called for a green roof to be installed on the new building to align the facility with the city’s vision to become more sustainable. We installed the garden roof and will maintain it for its first two years. Here, we also put stainless steel counterflashing throughout the 13,600 square foot roof.

While it was a challenge to balance and configure the green roof on time in order to meet the proper timeframe for planting and aligning it with the construction occurring on the current building, we are proud to say we completed both projects on schedule. It was exciting for us to work on a large-scale project that allowed us to perform multiple installations while meeting excessive deadlines.
