  1. Rebuilding Chicago’s Architectural and Cultural Heritage

We are proud to announce that two recent projects we worked on have won Chicago Landmark Awards. According to the City of Chicago, these prestigious awards recognize companies whose work on landmark building has contributed to historic preservation, revitalization, and to investing in Chicago’s architectural and cultural heritage.

    Lorado Taft Midway Studios

For the first project, at Lorado Taft Midway Studios, we removed and replaced their roofing (slate, asphalt shingles, and small low slope roofs) and sheet metal (copper and stainless steel flashings, gutters and downspouts), installed custom skylights, and rebuilt the cupola to replace the original. The roofing that was replaced on the main house part of the building was re-roofed in slate with copper sheet metal per original design. The remaining part of the building is a working studio where the custom skylights now allow artists to work with the benefit of the sun’s light.

    Indian Boundary Field House

Another project that was recognized was the Indian Boundary Field House. After a fire damaged much of the building, we removed and replaced slate roofing (multi-color, multi-width, and rescinding slate roof), as well as the copper sheet metal flashings, valleys, gutters, and downspouts. Installation of multi-color rescinding slate is challenging and requires skilled tradesmen to install properly. This style of design utilizes large slate at the eaves with progressively smaller slate installed toward the top ridge.

While both buildings were challenging to restore, we are always happy to have play a part in preserving Chicago’s landmark structures. Both buildings are now able to continue serving their original purpose while enhancing Chicago’s architectural and cultural heritage.
